Four Gospels (1924) remained for a long time the classical exposition of the view, first propounded by C. Lachmann in 1835, that Mark was the earliest gospel, that Matthew and Luke both made use of a source designated by the symbol
Q, and that in the case of Luke this source was first combined with his own material (a first draft of the gospel, ‘
Proto-Luke’) and later supplemented by the use of Mark.
